The sheer brilliance of Sachin Tendulkar combined with the deadly duo Wasim Akram & Waqar Younis, who could have ever imagined it would be anyone but India to lift the ICC World Cup” – Said no one ever.
A retrospective view on the Two-Nation Theory and eventually, the formation of Pakistan out of India has given rise to more catastrophic disasters than any intended solutions if there were any ever imagined that is. Language, culture, and the appreciation of arts have always had precedence over religious identities when creating bonds between humans and subsequently creating nations. If GOD did ever intend to create a nation for the exclusivity of humans, that nation has already been created it is called planet earth. Everything that follows after is merely the inability of humans to let go of our tribal natures.
Just like the first casualty of war is truth, every time an imaginary line on a map is carved to create countries and nations; a part of human evolution dies with it. I delve further into this to ensure I have made my point a tad bit more clear. Humans have survived and evolved to reach up to the food chain, with this one unique ability, that is to share information and tell stories; aka to communicate. We created the medium of words and pictures refined it to poetry and paintings and moving pictures and plays, to communicate opportunities and threats far beyond our physical reach. Like the migratory animals and birds, we too have travelled the globe back and forth for eons but beyond mere survival, we have gone a step forward and shared the stories of our travels. We created imaginations by painting visuals in the listeners' minds, we created wants and desires of promises that the lands far and beyond hold with them. We created the need to migrate even when it was not mandatory for survival but instead to make our imaginations become reality from the pictures that were painted by the ones who travelled before us.
Somebody someday but, decided to draw the line and say this is where your travel ends and now you need a passport and visa if you have to take back the same stories to the land you came from. If you are reading this piece in a land you were not born in it is most likely you bought into somebody's story someday that was convincing enough for you to migrate to where you are today. We all buy and act upon stories and create our culture, which is what bonds (and separates) us; the commonly interesting and mutually agreed upon, stories. The trouble starts when you don’t listen to the story I have to tell for the culture I want to establish. Thus I then force my story upon you by force & might, or manipulation by saying “Because God saith so!”, ceasing you from objecting to, or questioning my story. The partition and creation Pakistan out of India has evidently restricted us to share those stories and subsequently crumbling our opportunities to create the culture where for thousands of years we evolved and grew to the point that the dwellers of the historical ‘Hind - the subcontinent’ became the reason of global envy.
The inevitable partition: The stalling of the Shimla Convention 1945 was evident that the political maestros had very different ambitions to the hopes of the people they were the alleged representatives of. It took a less than a year even, for the half-baked Radcliffe line to be accepted as proposed; a suggestive evidence at best but, enough to flag the desperation for the real estate grab and identity politics which was at its peak just while the British Raj was left powerless post the second world war. A land of intertwined cultures was all set to be now identified as a land of religious identities.
We have to let go of the poetry we soothe our guilt with, that it was the final and the deadliest blow of the divide and rule policy which the British had used to impose and govern the Indian subcontinent during the Raj. It is time to own up to our faults and accept that the British, as always, were mere beneficiaries of the misplaced ambitions and greed of the ones who could afford to have one. Language and culture have always had precedence over religion when it comes to human bonds - a conveniently ignored wisdom by the wise men of undivided India.
