Thought of the month- Poverty & Homelessness in India

Message from ICSOA -Team

Homeless figures in Australia number around 116,427 (0.045% of the total population).

This is of concern to each of us and every Australian. There are various reasons for this but efforts of the government & NGOs are there to tackle this.

Few months back, I was crossing the Circular Quay station and spotted a homeless individual. My thoughts have gone back to India.

In India, there are over 3 Million homeless living on the street (0.22% of the total population of India). India has the highest number of children on the street in the world. An stimated 80 Million children are not going to school.

Two-thirds of people in India live in poverty. An estimated 68.8% of the Indian population lives on less than $2 a day.

Over 30% even have less than $1.25 per day available - they are considered extremely poor.

How much money, as Indian Muslims, are we spending on Iftars and Sahris all over the world? Even 10 % of the total amount, which we spend on lavish food, donate for the education for deserving worlds kids, can make a difference to the poor. Does this need a think tank action from all of us?

ICSOA is interested in establishing in future a think tank to discuss issues and possible suggestions for reducing poverty and for promoting education
