A strong congregation of over 1000 people gathered at Martin Place on Sunday 17th September 2017 to condemn the atrocities and ethnic cleansing currently unfolding in Myanmar. The participants were families and mainly those who had lost a loved one in the recent atrocities. The event was well organized with participants holding large banners depicting gruesome and horrific photographs of dead children and Rohingya Muslims with their limbs amputated. Several families whose had lost their direct family members voiced their anguish holding placards.
The organizers stated a factual and long history of Rohingya Muslims who had lived in Myanmar for several hundred years and were legitimate residents of the state. Despite gaining recognition from UN under Kofi Annan and Burmese governments as recognized citizens of Myanmar, the Rohingya underwent systemic and calculated persecution and indiscriminate execution and rape of women, children and the elderly over many decades.
Slogans of “Stop Rohingya Genocide”, “ Shame” and a demand for revoking the Nobel prize awarded to Aung Sun Suu Kyi was strongly supported. Media were present at the event, a noticeable absence were the mainstream free-to-air channels.
There is an urgent need and appeal to assist the refugees who have been removed from their destroyed homes forcibly and against their will. This genocide is one of the most horrific and will continue to torment generations. Please donate generously to genuine charities
