Can we ignore the effects of pollution

India has observed the World Environment Day 2018 on 5 June 2018. There are various Indian initiatives to combat climate change. This year, in particular, the environmental theme was "beat plastic bottles pollution".

Just sitting down on New Delhi Indian railway platform, I saw some cleaners cleaning platform with the broom and collecting a load of plastic bottles, and rubbish. The government may be doing some activities in important cities but public education is lacking, and people throw their garbage/bottles/ litters wherever they like to do.

Water in the Yamuna is so dirty that people event do not want to immerse of their loved ones. A report by the Central Groundwater Board reveals that Delhi is the third most overexploited groundwater state in India. As per Central Pollution Control Board number of polluted rivers in India has risen from 121 to 275 over the last five years.

On another side just very close to Delhi, the situation is terrible. It is challenging to asses when the garbage cleaning was arranged. Cows, dogs are roaming all around where the young kids are playing most popular game cricket.

Throughout my childhood, I read in my books about the necessity of cleanliness. I still remember the town garden, we used to call "company garden". There were more than 100 mangos trees and variety of roses. There was never any shortage of water. Bank of Ganges rivers was the most cleaned water in my town. Today there is no sign of any garden and river has moved to 3 KM from the boundaries and has over polluted water. It is almost impossible to see the clean water in the Ganges.

It seems that days are coming closer when we shall see clean water in books and pictures but not in real terms if we do not take immediate action. I do see an exceptional need of the culture change in India to improve the garbage handling practices and massive investment in the infrastructure to clean Indian environment.
